General principles
These hold across every app we publish:
- We do not sell your data. Not to advertisers, not to data brokers, not to anyone.
- We do not share your data for advertising. Where an app shows ads, this is stated plainly in that app's section.
- We collect the minimum an app needs to work, and each app's section says exactly what that is.
- You can refuse a permission and keep using whatever does not depend on it.
What Shoebox collects
Shoebox is a Windows program that sorts your photos and videos into folders by the date they were taken, and finds copies, near-identical shots and screenshots. It works entirely on your PC. It has no account, and it goes online for one thing only: keeping itself up to date.
What we collect
- Nothing is collected, transmitted or stored by us. There are no servers, no analytics, no crash reporting and no advertising. Your photos are never uploaded.
- What it reads. In the folders you choose, Shoebox reads each photo’s and video’s name, size and dates, and the details stored inside it: the date taken, and the make and model of the camera or phone. To find exact copies it reads the contents of files of the same size, only to compare them with each other. To find look-alikes it asks Windows for a small thumbnail of each photo and compares those. None of this is saved or sent anywhere; it is forgotten when you close Shoebox.
- What it remembers. The folders you chose, where sorted photos go and your options are kept in
AppData\Roaming\Shoebox, with a short event log (for example “organized so many files”). Each organize run also writes a small record file, starting with.shoebox-, inside the folder you sorted into; it lists which file went where, so the run can be undone. - What it changes. Only what you ask for: copies or moves photos into the folder you chose, and moves photos you remove to the Windows Recycle Bin.
What it changes on your PC
The program is copied into your own user folder (AppData\Local\Programs\Shoebox) with a Start menu shortcut. No admin rights are requested.
Updates
When it starts, Shoebox downloads a small file from www.aantstudio.com/updates.json that lists the newest version. If a newer one exists it downloads the installer from GitHub, where our downloads are hosted, and runs it. Those requests carry what any web request does — your IP address and a line naming the program — and nothing else.
Children
Shoebox collects no personal information from anyone, including children.
Data retention and deletion
There is nothing on our side to delete, because nothing reaches us. Uninstalling Shoebox removes the program, its settings and its log. Your photos, and the record files next to sorted photos, stay where they are.
Data security
Data in transit is encrypted with TLS. Access to production systems is limited to people who need it, and authentication and payment details are handled by the specialist providers named above rather than stored by us.
Your rights
Depending on where you live you may have the right to access, correct, export or delete your personal data, and to object to certain processing. Email contact@aantstudio.com and we will respond within 30 days.
California residents (CCPA)
We do not sell or share personal information as those terms are defined by the CCPA. You have the right to know what we collect, to request deletion, and not to be discriminated against for exercising either.
European Economic Area and UK (GDPR)
We process your data to perform the service you asked for, and on the basis of consent where a permission is involved. You have the right of access, rectification, erasure, restriction, portability, and to object. You may also complain to your local supervisory authority.
Children
Our apps are not intended for children under 13, or under the minimum age required where you live if that is higher. We do not knowingly collect data from children. If you believe a child has an account, email us and we will remove it.
Changes to this policy
If we change how we handle your data we will update this page and change the date at the top. Significant changes will also be announced in the app they affect.
